Many medications cause dry mouth because they change the saliva’s chemistry to be more acidic and diminish the normal flow that washes away old bacteria. This causes bacteria to linger on the teeth and gums, making you more prone to developing cavities and periodontal problems that can lead to tooth loss.
So let your dentist know if you recently changed medications. They may recommend more frequent hygiene visits to remove tartar and calculus or treatment such as xylitol tablets to stimulate salivary flow, an increase in fluoride intake, or a Bioténe® mouth rinse throughout the day. . .
